The 2026 Mazda CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid is engineered around the e-SKYACTIV PHEV system, which integrates a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine with a high-capacity electric motor and lithium-ion battery. The combined system produces up to 323 horsepower with premium unleaded fuel recommended and delivers up to 369 lb-ft of torque. The gasoline engine and electric motor operate through a SKYACTIV-Drive 8-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift mode. This transmission design eliminates a traditional torque converter and incorporates a multi-plate clutch system to optimize power transfer efficiency and responsiveness.
The electric motor is rated at up to 173 horsepower and contributes immediate torque delivery during acceleration. The lithium-ion battery operates at 355 volts and provides a total capacity of 17.8 kWh. The vehicle includes a 12V, 1.4 kW starter system integrated with the electrified powertrain architecture. Direct coil-on-plug electronic ignition and electronically controlled fuel injection manage combustion efficiency. The compression ratio for the gasoline engine is 13.0, and the engine block and cylinder head are constructed from aluminum alloy. Emission regulation for the PHEV variant is certified to SULEV30 standards.
Charging Capability and Electrical Specifications
The 2026 Mazda CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid supports both Level 1 and Level 2 charging. Using a 120V, 15-amp Level 1 outlet, charging from 0 to 100 percent state of charge requires approximately 11 hours under standard conditions. With a 240V, 30-amp Level 2 charging source, charging from 0 to 100 percent requires approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes. Charging from 20 to 80 percent state of charge using Level 2 power requires approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Level 3 DC fast charging is not supported for this configuration.
Select trims include a 1500W charging outlet integrated into the vehicle electrical system, providing additional external power capability. The battery pack is liquid-cooled and positioned beneath the floor structure to preserve interior volume and maintain a low center of gravity. Motor and generator output is rated at 68 kW according to EPA measurement. The integrated energy management system coordinates power delivery between the gasoline engine and electric motor based on driver demand and selected drive mode.
Disclaimer: Level 2 AC 240V at 30 amps charger. General conditions: State of charge (SOC) in the meter from 20% to 80%, battery temperature at 75° F. Charging times will vary based on charger type, vehicle and battery condition, temperature, and other factors. Actual results will vary. Please see your Owner's Manual for further details.
