Powertrain Engineering and Transmission Design
The 2025 Mazda3 Sedan offers two primary engine configurations. The standard option is the SKYACTIV-G® 2.5-liter DOHC 16-valve four-cylinder engine with cylinder deactivation. It generates 191 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 186 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. The optional SKYACTIV-G® 2.5 Dynamic Pressure Turbo engine produces 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque on 87-octane fuel, or 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque when using 93-octane gasoline. Both engines use advanced direct fuel injection and a 4-valve-per-cylinder valvetrain with variable valve timing. The naturally aspirated version maintains a compression ratio of 13.0:1, while the turbocharged configuration operates at 10.5:1.
Power delivery is managed by the Mazda SKYACTIV®-Drive six-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift and Sport modes. This transmission is electronically controlled for smooth shifting and efficient torque transfer. Certain configurations of the 2025 Mazda3 Sedan also offer the SKYACTIV®-MT six-speed manual transmission, allowing more direct control of gear engagement.
Front-wheel drive is standard for most trims, while the i-ACTIV all-wheel drive system is included on the Carbon Edition, Carbon Turbo, and Turbo Premium Plus models. This predictive AWD system continuously monitors wheel speed and traction conditions to distribute torque where it is most effective.
